“My name is Mikayla Goodwin-Reid, I am Métis and I grew up in foster care in Victoria British Columbia. I have FASD, ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety. I was raised in foster care with my 4 siblings by my grandparents. I am part of the Indigenous Youth Council at Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services, and for the past three years I have worked as an Indigenous youth researcher with a project called INVINCIBLE: Our Stories from Care. INVINCIBLE is an arts-based storytelling project created by Indigenous youth in care based at the University of Victoria. As part of INVINCIBLE, I have created a story about FASD called ‘It’s Not a Glitch, It’s My Life!”. I designed and wrote this story to share my personal experiences of growing up with FASD. My intention was to share the information with the child welfare system and foster parents so they can better support children in their care who have FASD, and also for children with FASD to know they are not alone. I have had the honour of presenting my story to audiences across BC and beyond. I have worked very hard to pursue my education and am currently studying psychology in college. My goal is to be an advocate for children and youth with disabilities and to ensure that FASD services and supports are delivered in an accessible and inclusive way.”
