Emily Jackson, Mark Boyes, Barbara Blundell, Juliana Hirn & Suze Leitão (24 Jan 2025): Managing cyberbullying among adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders: A scoping review, International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, DOI:10.1080/17549507.2025.2451305
Cyberbullying is a growing concern for adolescents, but those with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs)—such as FASD, ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities—are at increased risk of being both victims and perpetrators. The scoping review on managing cyberbullying among adolescents with NDDs highlights the unique challenges these individuals face in online interactions, including difficulties with social communication, impulse control, and interpreting online cues. While general cyberbullying prevention programs exist, there is limited research on effective interventions specifically designed for adolescents with NDDs.
Considerations for Parents & Caregivers
Parents and caregivers play a critical role in helping youth with NDDs navigate online spaces. Some key strategies include:
• Open communication: Regularly discuss online experiences and encourage youth to report concerns.
• Supervised technology use: Utilize parental controls and monitor social media interactions while promoting safe and respectful digital habits.
• Teaching digital literacy: Help youth recognize cyberbullying tactics, online risks, and appropriate responses to harmful interactions.
• Encouraging self-regulation: Support impulse control strategies, as youth with NDDs may struggle with reacting emotionally to online conflicts.
